I just love these three small desert vibes vintage vases. The tallest one is native Navajo vintage pottery, hand painted, 3.5 inches in diameter x 6.5 inches tall. Traditional Southwestern pottery often made with a coating of pine pitch to seal the pots. The second tallest is a vintage two spout wedding vase, made with the horse hair raku method, 4.5 inches in diameter x 5 inches tall. Please note that there is a blemish on one side, see photos. Wedding vases are a Native American traditional ceremonial item used on the wedding day. The groom starts by offering a sip out of the vase to his wife, followed by the bride offering it back to the groom. In some tribes the bride and groom sip out of the vase at the same time, with tradition dictating that if they are able to do this without spilling, they are destined to remain together. On top of this, the vase is made from a "horse hair raku" method of decorating pottery through the application of horsehair and other dry material to the heated piece. When burning, these materials create smoke patterns and carbon trails on the surface of the pottery. No horse harm in the process :) What a lovely symbolic piece to display with such an interesting history! The smallest vase is hand painted Costa Rican pottery, 3 inches in diameter x 2.5 inches tall. Costa Rica pottery created in Guaitil has been made the same way for centuries: First, the clay is harvested from the mountains. The clay has to be dried and pounded into a powder before it can be used in pottery. It is mixed with iguana sand, a fine freshwater sand where iguanas lay their eggs. All sold separately.
Vintage items will likely show signs of age and use. This is part of their vintage charm.
